You don't need a cabinet full of specialty cleaners to keep a grill in good shape. A handful of the right tools, used correctly, cover almost every job. Here's what we reach for — and what we skip.
Grill brushes
Skip wire-bristle brushes if you can — bristles break off over time and can end up embedded in food, which is a real (if uncommon) safety issue. Better options:
- Stainless steel coil or chainmail brushes — no loose bristles, very durable, work well on stainless and cast iron grates.
- Bristle-free nylon-block brushes — good for regular maintenance cleans, gentler on porcelain-coated grates.
- Grill stones/bricks — a pumice-style block that scrubs without any risk of bristle contamination; great for a quick clean before cooking.
Degreasers
Look for a degreaser labeled safe for use on grills and cookware — these are formulated to cut through baked-on carbon without leaving a residue that smokes off (and affects flavor) the next time you cook.
- Citrus- or enzyme-based degreasers — effective on grease, food-safe, no harsh fumes.
- Foaming grill cleaners — cling to vertical surfaces inside the firebox, good for interior walls and lids.
For stainless steel exteriors
A dedicated stainless steel cleaner and a microfiber cloth, wiped with the grain, prevents streaking and keeps the surface from developing water spots. Plain dish soap and water works fine too — just dry it afterward rather than air-drying, which is what causes spotting.
Tools worth having
- A stiff putty scraper for stuck-on carbon on grates and firebox walls
- A shop vacuum (or wet/dry vac) for ash and loose debris — much faster than sweeping
- Rubber gloves — degreasers are harder on hands than they are on grease
- A soft-bristle detail brush for burner ports and tight spaces
Eco-friendly options
If you'd rather avoid synthetic degreasers, a paste of baking soda and water handles moderate grease buildup, and plain white vinegar cuts through mineral deposits on grates and grease trays. They take more scrubbing than a commercial degreaser, but they're food-safe and inexpensive.
