If you've only ever owned one type of grill, switching to the other can be a surprise — the grate cleaning is nearly identical, but everything underneath the grates is a completely different job.

Gas grills: the burner is the real work

Gas grill cleaning centers on keeping burner ports clear and heat shields free of grease buildup. There's no ash to deal with, but grease drips straight down onto burners and heat shields every time you cook, and it accumulates fast. The grease tray fills gradually and is easy to forget about — a full tray is the single most common cause of gas grill flare-ups.

  • Burner ports need periodic clearing with a small brush or pin — clogged ports cause uneven flames.
  • Heat shields or flavorizer bars need degreasing every few cleans; they take the brunt of drippings.
  • The grease tray should be checked and emptied regularly, not just during a deep clean.

Charcoal grills: ash management is the real work

Charcoal grills skip the burner maintenance entirely but add a different chore: ash has to be fully removed and cooled before disposal, and it needs to happen more often than most people expect — a thick layer of ash restricts airflow to the coals and makes it harder to maintain temperature.

  • Ash should be cleared after every use once it's completely cool — never bag hot ash, it can smolder for days.
  • Vents (top and bottom) need occasional cleaning; ash buildup in the vents restricts airflow control.
  • The charcoal grate underneath the cooking grate collects grease and ash together and needs its own scrub.

So which one is actually easier to clean?

Neither is objectively easier — they're different types of maintenance. Gas grills need less frequent attention but the burner and grease-tray work is more involved when you do get to it. Charcoal grills need attention after nearly every use (ash removal) but each individual task is simpler. If you're choosing a grill based partly on maintenance effort, gas is the better fit for infrequent grillers; charcoal suits people who don't mind a quick ash-out as part of the ritual.
