Pellet grills (Traeger, Pit Boss, Camp Chef, and similar) burn wood pellets fed by an auger into a fire pot, which makes their cleaning needs different from a gas or charcoal grill. Skipping this maintenance doesn't just affect flavor — it can affect how evenly the grill holds temperature.

After every few cooks

  • Empty the grease bucket. Pellet grills funnel grease to an external bucket or bin — a full one is a fire risk and a mess waiting to happen.
  • Brush the grates the same way you would on any grill, once cooled.

Every few months (or once a season)

  • Clean the grease drain tube. This is the step people forget — the tube between the firebox and the grease bucket can clog with hardened grease, which backs up and can smoke or even catch fire inside the barrel.
  • Vacuum the fire pot and firebox. Ash and burnt pellet residue builds up around the fire pot and interferes with consistent ignition. A shop vacuum with a narrow attachment clears it quickly.
  • Check the auger for jams. A partially clogged auger causes temperature swings and "flame-outs." Most pellet grill manuals include a simple auger-clearing procedure — usually removing a bottom panel and clearing any compacted pellet dust.
  • Wipe down the drip tray or heat baffle that sits above the fire pot — this is where most direct grease buildup collects.
Fire risk note: a clogged grease drain is one of the more common causes of pellet grill fires. If you smell burning grease or see smoke from underneath the barrel rather than the lid, shut off the grill and check the drain tube before your next cook.

Signs your pellet grill needs cleaning

  • Temperature swings or trouble holding a steady set point
  • Excess smoke on startup, beyond the normal initial burn-off
  • A burning-grease smell rather than a wood-smoke smell
  • Visible grease pooling in the barrel bottom instead of draining out
