Burner ports are the small holes along a gas burner tube where flame comes out. Grease, debris, and even spider webs (a surprisingly common culprit) can clog them over time, causing uneven flames, cold spots, or a burner that won't light evenly across its full length.
Signs your burners need cleaning
- Flames that are uneven along the burner's length, with visible gaps
- Yellow or orange flames instead of mostly blue (can also indicate a clogged venturi tube)
- A burner that's slow to light or won't stay lit
- Noticeable hot and cold spots across the cooking surface
How to clean burner ports
- Turn off the gas and disconnect the tank before doing any burner work.
- Remove the burner if your grill allows it — most gas grills have burners that lift out for easier access, check your manual for the release mechanism.
- Clear each port individually. A small wire (a straightened paperclip works, or a dedicated grill port-cleaning tool) pushed gently into each port clears debris. Avoid widening the holes — use something the same size or smaller than the port itself.
- Brush off the exterior of the burner tube with a small brush to remove loose grease and debris.
- Check the venturi tube — the tube connecting the burner to the gas valve, often where spiders build webs that block gas flow. A pipe cleaner or bottle brush clears it.
- Reassemble and test — light the grill and check for even blue flame across the full length of each burner.
